AOL Takes Over Bebo For $850 Million

AOL added to its bid inorder for increased traffic and advertising knocks as the in competition internet company agreed a $850 million for the social networking site BEBO, inturn getting a chance in the growing social media fraternity. As matter of fact Bebo still walks under the shadows of MySpace and Facebook, it is strong in some foreign markets though, including Britain.aolmain_452174a.jpg

AOL top officials are planning to draw the engaed traffic to AOL’s other free, ad-supported Web sites, especially internationally, while counting on AOL’s instant-messaging communities, AIM and ICQ, to try to grow Bebo in the United States.
“This is going to be the cornerstone of our strategy to really go after the social media space,” Ron Grant, AOL’s president and chief operating officer, said in an interview.

In a Press conference for the reporters, AOL’s Chief Executive Randy Falco called the acquisition “game-changing for AOL,” a move that will power the company’s strategic push into advertising.

AOL has been working out ways to improve ad revenue to pullback steep declines in dial-up Internet subscriptions. After several quarters of strong growth, AOL’s advertising expansion has been slowing, putting pressure on the company’s parent, Time Warner Inc., to sell the Internet unit.Falco said Time Warner’s willingness to spend $850 million in cash indicated its commitment to AOL’s future, though eMarketer analyst David Hallerman likened the move to renovating a home before selling it at a higher price.bebo.jpg

Company officials declined comment on recent reports that Yahoo Inc. has stepped up talks with Time Warner about buying or forming a joint venture with AOL as Yahoo tries to fend off a $40 billion-plus takeover bid from Microsoft Corp.

The Bebo acquisition could make a Yahoo-AOL deal less likely by adding one more integration headache to the mix, said Roger Kay, who heads the market research firm Endpoint Technologies Associates. The deal is AOL’s largest since it bought MapQuest for $1 billion in 2000 (not counting AOL’s $106 billion purchase of Time Warner in 2001).San Francisco-based Bebo Inc. has about 100 employees and plans to launch in five countries this year.

The upcoming feature will allow the users on Facebook to view clippings from famous movies including the likes of “The Ten Commandments”, “Forest Gump,” to send to others on the popular social networking site.Paramount senior vice president of entertainment Derek Broes was quoted as saying that these clips help relive the moment when one saw the movie and would help recall the emotions. The clips last from a few seconds to several minutes.

The studio in return will be advertising the sale of of DVDs of the movies through a buttonvisible after the clip view.It eventually wants to use the application to virally market upcoming releases. For example, VooZoo is withholding clips from the “Indiana Jones” series until it works out a way to market the May 22 release facebook.jpgof the latest installment, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

FanRocket founder Danny Kastner said he is expecting to get a few hundred thousand users within a couple of months and hinted about the company’s talks with other studios of Hollywood to share their videos.

However such plannings would take time for implementation since Paramount staffers needed more than a year to select clips from the archive and tag them with search terms.Paramount says it has no goals targetted concerning revenues from the new ventur,According to its president,Derek Broes his benchmark for success is that people are joining and sending.

T-Series Takes YouTube To The Court

Seems Like YouTube Is Never Out Of Controversies..

The entertainment world Biggie T-Series has dragged the Video sharing giant YouTube before the Law,with the claims of alleged violation of copyrights for its music products. Bhushan Kumar of T-Series filed a case against YouTube and its parent company Google Inc in the Delhi High Court.

Past week, the court had issued a notice against YouTube and Google, and passed an interim order restraining them from “reproducing, adapting, distributing, communicating, transmitting, disseminating or displaying on their websites or otherwise infringing in any manner any audio visual works in which the SCIL owns exclusive, valid and subsisting copyright”.youtube-down.png

“You can free download and upload on YouTube and the website is using our promotional materials without seeking our permission,” said Kumar.

“We have been negotiating with them for a long time, but they get away by saying, ‘Surfers are doing it, we are not doing anything’. But they are allowing surfers to use their website to do the crime and they should pay for it. It’s harming our business.”

“More hits means more revenues. People are flocking the website and it earns revenues in millions from advertisements. Kumar claimed that the revenue of the music industry had gone down by 40-50 percent because of the “illegal websites”.

“After Google took over YouTube, it paid a huge amount of money to foreign music labels to allow them to use their promotional materials, but they are not doing the same for Indian music companies,” he claimed.

Microsoft Brings Out Windows Live

After a trickle of updates and “betas” , Microsoft Corp. is ready to start promoting its official package of free desktop programs for e-mail, instant messaging, blogging and sharing photos. The programs are “essentially a free upgrade for Windows,” said Brian Hall, general manager of Windows Live at Microsoft.windows-logo51.jpg

The package consists of Windows Live Mail, which can grab messages from multiple free Web-based e-mail accounts, including Microsoft’s Hotmail, Google Inc.’s Gmail and AOL e-mail. The new package, to launch Tuesday, allows PC users to read and respond to mail even when they’re not online, just as Outlook Express, which Microsoft has phased out, did.

Its Windows Live Photo Gallery lets users manipulate and organize digital photos and upload them to Flickr, a photo-sharing site owned by Yahoo, and to Windows Live Spaces, Microsoft’s own blogging and social networking site.

The package also includes Live Writer, for writing blog posts, the Live Messenger instant-messaging program and Live Family Safety, parental controls for Web surfing at home. The applications aren’t much different from test versions previously available.

Photobucket Advanced Now With Tagging Features

Tagging On Photobucket..
The media-sharing News Corp.’s Fox Interactive Media site Photobucket is introducing a search mechanism that lets users append labels to specific faces and objects in photos. The new ‘tagging’ feature, lets users easily link to external sites such as online references on a landmark photographed.photobucket_1.jpg

Tagging represents a way to organize photos, video and other information with multiple descriptive words. On Google Inc.’s YouTube, for instance, video of a python attacking rabbit gets tags that include “python, snake, rabbit, reptile, eat, devour, food, chain”, helping to guide people who search the site looking for any of those things.

With rival Flickr from Yahoo Inc., users must list every name as a tag for the entire photo, though Photobucket’s new feature is like Flickr’s Notes, which lets users attach a non-searchable note to part of a photo. When users embed Photobucket photos into other sites – such as personal profile pages at its sister site MySpace – the tags and attached links will follow them there.

Seven children and the school principal were killed on Wednesday when a fellow pupil opened fire at a school in southern Finland, hours after a clip posted on video sharing Web site YouTube predicted a massacre there. The YouTube video, set to a hard-driving song called ‘Stray Bullet’, shows a still photo of a low building that appears to be the Jokela High School.

Google Encounters A Flaw On Its News Site

Google Commits A Mistake!!
Engineers at Google Inc. are working to resolve a problem on the company’s Google News site that has resulted in some photos and news stories being mismatched.

Searches conducted on Google News on Friday occasionally returned photos from Reuters Group PLC that didn’t match the stories they were listed next to, such as a shot of bunches of vegetables that appeared alongside a story about a Japanese merger firm.ogco_google_1006.jpg

Another story listed on Google News’ top business stories had a Reuters photo of a guitarist next to a Wall Street Journal story about Sprint Nextel considering changes to a wireless Internet service plan.

Google’s news pages are automated and use computer coding, or algorithms, to select and display stories. Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker said its algorithms appeared to be mismatching some material, but the problem appeared to be mainly with photos from Reuters.Stricker said Google’s engineers are working to solve the glitch and that it wasn’t quite clear why the problem appears to be associated with Reuters material.

Stricker called the mismatches “a really unfortunate mistake, and we’re working very hard to fix it”.
