When we hear about the world’s ultra thin laptops, it suddenly clicks the Apple’s MacBook Air which was launched earlier this year. The MacBook Air with its ultra svelte shape is comfortable to use .
Talking about the low-cost ultra portable laptops like the Asus Eee and Everex CloudBook. These laptops are better and more full-featured. The ultra portables Laptop has at most, 10-inch display, while the smallest display in this group was 12.1 inches, the number of compromises (such as tweaked keyboards or less ports) in these laptops that could affect the user experience.
Let us find out whether Apple’s MacBook Air notebook compete with its nearest competitors, the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 and the Toshiba Portege R500-S5002.
Let’s see the Apple’s MacBook Air and its competitors
Apple’s MacBook Air has gained a lot of publicity since its launch in January.Its thickest point it’s a scant 0.76 inches thick. Weighing three pounds, the Air might be easy to carry, but it is comparatively powerful, with a 13.3-in. display and an Intel 1.6-GHz Core 2 Duo processor and an (80-120)GB hard drive.
The new Toshiba’s Portege R500-S5002 has emphasis on lightness. Weighing 2.4 pounds and it is the world’s lightest full laptop so far . The Toshiba’s Portege R500-S5002 is selled in screen size; at 12.1 inches, the R500 has the smallest display in this group. Like the Lenovo, this laptop came with a 1.2-GHz Core 2 Duo processor. It also had a standard (120 or 160)GB hard drive.
In February 2008, The Lenovo introduced ThinkPad X300 which is slightly lighter but also slightly thicker than Apple’s MacBook Air .It has the same size display as the Air. It’s unit had a 1.2-GHz Core 2 Duo processor and a 64GB Hard drive.
Let The Battle Begins
1) When Connecting to the Wireless Network
The MacBook Air and Lenovo performed similarly, it reqires about 2 minutes 25 seconds to connect. The Toshiba took, on an average, about 3 minutes 55 seconds to connect .
2) When Connecting a Flash Drive and do some task
The Lenovo was much faster; It took about 35 sec to complete the task, where as the Mac and Toshiba took closer to 45 sec.
3) When Connecting to a Projector and Project the Laptop Display to a Screen
The Toshiba Portege R500 shows the best performance in this test, with both the fastest completion times and greatest ease of use. The Air started projecting images immediately after the projector was plugged in.
4) When Shutting Down the Computer
The MacBook Air is the best in this test. Shutting down the Mac required about 10 seconds on average, which was four times faster than both on the Lenovo and Toshiba.
The Apple’s MacBook Air has the clear edge over both the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 and the Toshiba Portege R500-S5002 in terms of usability metrics .The MacBook Air came out on top overall, the results that varied from test to test. The Lenovo was highly rated for its durability. The Toshiba was considered the most portable and compact on testing.
