Microsoft Comes With A Big Catch On Piracy

Microsoft has been working over it for almost a decade now,and for a relief it has recently got considerable achievements in suppressing its major effects and getting hold of root causes.Microsoft launched out 21 programs over a decade ,tracing out scores of countries using fake software and pirated versions of the Windows operating system. This trend caught pace, when US Customs officers caught a shipping container in Los Angeles containing a whooping $100 million in fake software, including 31,000 copies of the Windows operating system.

Since then,Microsoft  hasn,t slowed down and has being forcing the investigation through 22 countries. Microsoft estimates the retail value of the software the operation generated at $900 million. James Spertus, a former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles who later led anti-piracy efforts for the Motion Picture Association of America said it was an exceptional achievement  and believed that “There are only going to be a few cases like this in a decade.”vista_and_hamburglar.jpg

Now Microsoft is eager to talk about the experience because taking down that operation – responsible for about 90 percent of the fake software the company found between 1999 and 2004, more than 470,000 disks – didn’t actually stop piracy. It just left room for more counterfeiters to rise.

Microsoft hopes would-be pirates will think twice if they know how far it will go to protect the computer code worth billions in revenue each quarter.

The pirates mimicked complex holograms stamped directly onto disks and packaging materials embedded with the kind of tiny safety threads used in making money. In some cases, it took experts with microscopes to notice that disks printed with codes used by legitimate software factories lacked certain minuscule, unique smudges.

“The copies were so good, we went to tremendous forensic and scientific lengths to establish that the counterfeits were, in fact, counterfeits,” said David Finn, an associate general counsel at Microsoft.

Talking about all this Microsoft continues to thwart the piracy possibilities and its efiicient counter measures to forfeit Piracy.

Samsung SGH-G800 Mobile Phone Review

samsung_sgh_g800.jpgAfter Nokia launched its N95 (8GB), Sony Ericsson its K850i and LG its Viewty, it inevitably wouldn’t be long before Samsung joined the 5-megapixel camera phone battle. You’ve probably seen the advert for it, showing a man happily taking pictures of heart-shaped objects. Is this photo-centric handset a camera phone love-fest? We took it out for a spin to see if it lived up to the hype.

For a company that’s renowned for making slim phones such as the U700, the G800 is far from ultra thin. It’s about the same size as the Nokia N95 and weighs a not-so-pocket-friendly 129g. Looking past its chunkiness, this is an attractive handset with a glossy finish similar to the LG Shine and a reassuring solid casing made up of metal and plastic.

What’s obvious about the G800 is that it’s heavily influenced by camera design. On the back, there’s a simple cover that protects the lens and xenon flash. Once the camera is on, you hold the G800 horizontally–as you would a standalone digital camera–and press the easy-to-use shutter button to take pictures and volume rocker to zoom in and out.

071002_g800_1.jpgOn the phone side of things, Samsung has fortunately avoided putting in any touch-sensitive buttons–the keypad, navigation keys and soft keys are all mechanical. We’re also glad to see that all the keys are large and well laid-out, although some may find the keypad a little tough to press sometimes, depending on what you’re used to.
Features

In terms of features, the Samsung G800 really takes Samsung’s camera phone portfolio to a new level. Combining a 5-megapixel sensor, Xenon flash, autofocus, LED focus-assist light, 3x optical (inner) zoom, image stabilization (digital) and red-eye reduction, it’s impressively close on paper to a standalone digital camera.

It’s not all about the camera, though. There’s a comprehensive music player that supports several files including, MP3, AAC and WMA files, and an FM radio. The handset also includes a Web browser and HSDPA (3.5G), so you can browse the Web at up to speeds of 7.2Mbps (depending on the network). The G800 also supports java games and applications such as Google Maps.

5-In-1 Digital Photo Frame Review

photostation.jpgDigital picture frames have really taken off this year, almost as much as we are tired of ipod docks, but regardless this one is a bit different than the rest.

Mustek’s Photostation PF-D420 is a smaller sized digital picture frame with a 2.4? LCD TFT display that makes it more suited for a bedside table than a coffee table. This may not be as well known a brand as philips or kodak but they look to know what they are doing in the digital frame department with excellent picture quality.

The PF-D240 can playback JPEG photos and it also has an MP3 player, an FM radio, a clock with alarm clock functions, a thermometer and a built-in speaker.

No, but it’s definitely a practical gadget.

Sony Ericsson K850i Review

The K850i strikes us as lightly updated K800i that looks more modernand clean. It’s still got the K series basic candy bar design, and thephone’s size hasn’t changed significantly. The back hump from old.Cybershot phones is thankfully a thing of the past, and the K850i has a flat back with a piano black finish that looks simply lovely and camera-like though it attracts fingerprints like the plague. The K850i inherits the K810i’s little number keys, but these are square rather than round and
a bit rubbery for better dialing traction.

The K850i incorporates a partly touchscreen-like display. Three nodes at the bottom of the 2.2 inch display  are the three points that are touch-sensitive. The keypad is a bit odd with squarish protruding keys.

Sony Ericsson K850i Review

As for navigation, the blue areas around 2 and 5 are slightly raised to serve as navigation points, and the center touch-sensitive area at the bottom is the Select key. There also two pairs of dedicated keys on either side, above the keypad, for taking calls, shortcuts, a cancel key, and ending calls. One one side, at the top, are the volume/zoom keys.

Below is a switch for the camera for Still, Video and Gallery. Alongside that is a dedicated camera key that has a power key only for the camera. At the rear is the 5 megapixel camera with a Xenon flash. On most phones, the battery lives under a door on the back.

The back comprises the camera on the K850i, and is not removable. Instead, the battery loads via a door on the bottom edge, similar to slim point-and-shoot cameras .The SIM and memory cards also load here, and you need not remove the battery to swap a memory card. Also on the bottom edge, beside the battery door you’ll find the Sony Ericsson Fast Port connector for the charger and headphones.
